2011 Honorable Mentions: Doug’s List

2011 has been a strange gaming year for me. I’ve been able to follow the industry as much (or more) than ever before thanks to some fantastic web sites and podcasts, but for much of the year I couldn’t (and didn’t) buy a new console game. I’ve made up for lost time since October, but much of my attention has also gone to older titles. I almost excused myself from Game of the Year discussions by default.

But there are many games that I have played which deserve recognition. So kick back and read on!

Backlog: Return of the Back(log) Edition

Once again, we have returned from a brief hiatus to discuss what in the world of video games has been on our mind and taking up our time. It’s been a little while so we’ve had plenty of time to get some games in during the early summer — Nick and Tyler both have thoughts on InFamous, Aaron’s now one of us, and Doug’s catching up with two of 2010′s best action games. Nick also weighs in with what is easily one of the most bizarre recommendations we’ve ever made.

Anyways, without further ado (do do), TO THE BACKLOOOOOOG!

Backlog: In from the cold edition

A rare moment of Portland winter when it wasn't grey and rainy! Instead it's just clear and cold.

Happy New Year! Brrrrrrr. It’s cold out there. It hasn’t snowed at all in Portland this year, but it has been frigid around here. Cold enough to make streets a little slick and freeze car locks if you’re parking outside. It’s kind of sad that we didn’t get a last-minute snowfall to provide a true White Christmas, but considering the insanity that happens whenever Portlanders have to drive in the snow, it probably saved millions in insurance claims.

It’s also been cold enough to stay inside and play some games, which we’ve been doing! Nick has (shockingly) kept on playing Minecraft, Doug is still living out sports fantasies, and Aaron has shared the joy of Civilization V. So, without further ado, we present the first Backlog of 2011.

2010 Game of the Year Awards: Numbers 7 and 6

Today is Tuesday, December 28th, and that means it’s time for the next two games on our top ten list to be revealed! Here are our picks for the seventh- and sixth-best games of the year that was 2010.

Backlog: The Final Countdown Edition

It was either this or a picture of a Sasquatch-ified Gob Bluth. It's worth noting that, for once, ol' Sasquatch has the least implausible hair out of the bunch.

Our missives have been delivered without detection, each reaching the intended recipient under the strictest of discretionary measures. Exactly 24 hours from now, we’ll all convene at the predetermined meeting spot to do our dark work in secrecy.

Yeah, you guessed it. It’s that time of year where a bunch of dorks get together to drink beer and argue for a few hours about what the ten best games of the year were.

We’ll be continuing the tradition we established in 2009 by running a series of articles on our top ten games of 2010, along with a series of honorable mentions. This time we’re expanding things by bringing Matt into the fold, while longtime contributors Tyler and Spencer will be stepping up once again to weigh in.

Those articles will run starting on Monday, December 27th, and will culminate with our #1 Game of the Year on Friday, New Year’s Eve.

How did we spend our last week preparing for the debate? As it turns out, we didn’t really play a whole lot of games. You could call it unprofessional, but I prefer to think that we’re just on top of things this time around. Considering how many hours I sank into this year’s big releases throughout November (way too many, before you go and count), I think we’re probably more than ready to hash things out tomorrow.

Anyway, here’s what we’ve been up to.

The Backlog: Civil War Edition

Image by friend of the site Brian Gundell

I don’t care who you are, if you’re an Oregonian, this is a weekend you care about. It’s Civil War weekend, and as proud (if a bit underemployed) alumni of the University of Oregon, all three of us have a side to take in the game. Good luck getting much done in Portland tomorrow between noon and 4 pm, and god speed to anyone driving south on I-5 from Portland who isn’t going to the game. I don’t think it hurts us to take an excessively pro-Ducks stance, so here goes:

LET’S GO DUCKS!

We do have the usual Backlog content to go with the heaping of school pride, though. Nick’s been stabbin’ fools in Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, Doug’s tackling some single-player games passed over during the year, and Aaron has been finding a balance between work, games, and the Wasteland.
