The Backlog: This is Why We Play edition

We’re celebrating the joy of gaming this week. Sometimes, it takes a little time away to appreciate how great gaming is; sometimes, it just strikes you after coming back to a recent classic. Other times, it’ll sink in despite frustrations.

Doug has hit the track again, Tyler has wound through the Mass Effect 2 DLC, and Nick has finally settled down in the great state of Texas and has time to play lots of games again. So without further ado, on to the Backlog!

The Backlog: Party Like it’s 2010 edition

The Backlog is, of course, for the games we’ve been playing as of late and, ideally, games that are brand new. The cutting edge!

That’s how it turns into our Backlog being full of brand-new bangers like…um…Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Quest IX? Riiiiiiiiiight. Well. At least we’ve got things to say about these games, plus honest-to-god newer wares, too.

Anyway. To the Backlog!

Backlog: The Final Countdown Edition

It was either this or a picture of a Sasquatch-ified Gob Bluth. It's worth noting that, for once, ol' Sasquatch has the least implausible hair out of the bunch.

Our missives have been delivered without detection, each reaching the intended recipient under the strictest of discretionary measures. Exactly 24 hours from now, we’ll all convene at the predetermined meeting spot to do our dark work in secrecy.

Yeah, you guessed it. It’s that time of year where a bunch of dorks get together to drink beer and argue for a few hours about what the ten best games of the year were.

We’ll be continuing the tradition we established in 2009 by running a series of articles on our top ten games of 2010, along with a series of honorable mentions. This time we’re expanding things by bringing Matt into the fold, while longtime contributors Tyler and Spencer will be stepping up once again to weigh in.

Those articles will run starting on Monday, December 27th, and will culminate with our #1 Game of the Year on Friday, New Year’s Eve.

How did we spend our last week preparing for the debate? As it turns out, we didn’t really play a whole lot of games. You could call it unprofessional, but I prefer to think that we’re just on top of things this time around. Considering how many hours I sank into this year’s big releases throughout November (way too many, before you go and count), I think we’re probably more than ready to hash things out tomorrow.

Anyway, here’s what we’ve been up to.

The Backlog: Planes, Games, and Automobiles Edition

A hectic week for all involved in the Sasquatch-sphere, as we’ve been all over the proverbial world map. Doug’s been to the south and back, Aaron’s been busy in the Bay Area, Nick is taking off for points unknown (I’m convinced he’s a government operative and I’d be killed if I knew), and Tyler, our man in Japan, has been finishing games faster than you can say “Hai, douzo!” However, there’s been some time to play games in there — everything from JRPGs to iPhone best-sellers, with a dash of Minecraft thrown in for good measure.

Without further ado…on with the Backlog.

The Backlog: Totally off-topic tribute edition

No smart-ass commentary, no tongue-in-cheek humor, just a nice thought for the weekend. Tomorrow would have been John Lennon’s 70th birthday. Even if you’re not a fan of the man or the music, it’s hard to deny that the message was a good one.

In case you’re wondering if there’s a video game connection, Lennon’s iconic song “Imagine” is included in Rock Band 3, which is out October 26th. So there you go.

Doug and Aaron are both out of the state this weekend, so the honor of posting this backlog falls upon me. They’re off doing some pretty awesome things; meanwhile, I’m nursing my aching shins and bemoaning the imminent fall rains.

The Backlog: Utilitarian edition

Do not be afraid by the stark plainness of this post. Refuse to cower at the wall of text following this introduction. Most of all, please understand that this boring backlog article is in such a state for good reason.

A BEACH TRIP!

That’s right: Nick, Doug and myself are travelling to the Oregon coast this weekend, and we don’t have time for such crazy frivolities as “graphics” and “pleasant visual design.” But don’t presume our adventure is only for the pursuit of wacky fun and wild games (and drinking); No, we will be working on our book. There’s a lot to do to for that project, because publishin’ ain’t easy, as Big Daddy Hearst once said.

The Backlog: Bursting at the Seams Edition

Huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge backlog for everybody this week. Nick is trying to tie up loose ends before the fall games rush starts up, Doug is tearing through demos of some impending releases, and Aaron is spending time on some small game by a developer in Seattle…has something to do with Rings (maybe they’re finally doing a good Sonic game?). Oh, you mean it’s called Halo? Haven’t heard of it.

Seriously, the crew is in a verbose mood this week. Bring a drink, sit down and enjoy our wordiness. Without further ado, the backlog awaits.

The Backlog: The case of the kidnapped burrito unicorn edition

In case you’ve never been to Seattle before, consider this your primer.

In this week’s Backlog: Aaron laments his decidedly first-world problem of having too many games to play, Doug reminisces on the Dreamcast’s glory days, and Nick tries his hardest to remember everything he played at PAX last week.

The Backlog: Conventiontime Blues edition

This is basically what PAX looks like, except with more neckbeards, less politics, and a sea of iPhones

I couldn’t go to PAX 10. Neither could Doug. But Nick’s there! He’s also Internet famous now, thanks to his picture being taken at a Rock Band 3 event last night and then posted to Twitter. I can only hope that in his new-found celebrity, Nick Cummings won’t forget the little guy. And by “forget the little guy” I mean I hope he invites us to really rad pool parties in Hollywood.

OK. I won’t feel so bad about jumping right into the backlog now that my introduction is complete.

Let’s do this.

The Backlog: Silicon Sasquatch’s Finest Hour edition

Scott's a rocker. He rocks out.

So this book called Scott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour came out this week. You might not have read the series yet, but you’ve probably heard about the comics, or the upcoming game, or the movie starring Michael Cera. The reason it bears mentioning is that it’s a spot-on representation of the minds and memories of all of us children of the ’80s who grew up on Nintendo and Sega. If that sounds like something you can relate to, you’re probably going to love the comics.

It really has been a good week for us, too. This is our fifth post in seven days, which is almost a record for us. It’s even more impressive when you recall that we’re only running at two-thirds of our normal capacity because Aaron’s working  a summer job in the wilds of Oregon. But while he’s no doubt been perfecting his mountain-man beard and learning to forage for roots or something, Doug and I have been holding down the fort by playing our fair share of games. Check out what we’ve been up to after the jump, and if you’re feeling generous, why not let us know what you’ve been playing in the comments section? Consider it your one charitable act of the day.
