Gran Turismo and the Impact of Games On Our Lives

Almost a month ago, a Japanese engineer named Shinichiro Sakurai passed away. About a week later, he was eulogized in one of the largest Japanese daily newspapers, the Asahi Shimbun, and remembered as a passionate legend in his field. A couple days later a friend tweeted that article; I read it and sat awestruck. This was partially due to the man’s accomplishments, but after a few minutes of contemplation, I came to realize how many different points in my life met at Sakurai-san and his work.

Why the hell am I writing about this on a web site that is ostensively, about video games? Because for me, it all starts and begins with a video game: Gran Turismo.

Review: Formula 1 2010 (Xbox 360)

I have incredibly mixed feelings about Formula 1 2010. On the one hand, this is the first Formula 1-based game on next-gen platforms since Sony’s F1 Championship Edition in 2006. As well, the game does an amazing job painting a portrait of the Formula 1 circus, from the glitz and glamor in the paddock to the thunder and thrills on the track. However, the game has a facade that is too easily broken; compounding the problem is that it feels unfinished in spots.

Reviewer’s Note: We will run an amendment article at a later date, once F1 2010 is patched to address the numerous issues with the game. As it stands right now, it feels unfinished and has numerous frustrating bugs, including one that corrupts save data; when, and how, these are addressed is a major issue surrounding the game right now.

The Backlog: Of Dark Knights and Dead Consoles

It’s been a bit of a difficult week for the Silicon Sasquatch staff. Nick spent much of the week reformatting and fine-tuning his computer before hauling it up north for the sixth annual Penny Arcade Expo and its thousand-seat LAN — a stressful experience, and one that leaves precious little time for gaming. Doug’s third Xbox 360 fell under the alluring spell of the Red Ring of Death and is currently drifting towards Valhalla. And Aaron? Well…Aaron’s the lucky one who actually got to sit down and play through Batman: Arkham Asylum.
