The Backlog: Civil War Edition

Image by friend of the site Brian Gundell

I don’t care who you are, if you’re an Oregonian, this is a weekend you care about. It’s Civil War weekend, and as proud (if a bit underemployed) alumni of the University of Oregon, all three of us have a side to take in the game. Good luck getting much done in Portland tomorrow between noon and 4 pm, and god speed to anyone driving south on I-5 from Portland who isn’t going to the game. I don’t think it hurts us to take an excessively pro-Ducks stance, so here goes:

LET’S GO DUCKS!

We do have the usual Backlog content to go with the heaping of school pride, though. Nick’s been stabbin’ fools in Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, Doug’s tackling some single-player games passed over during the year, and Aaron has been finding a balance between work, games, and the Wasteland.

The Backlog: Speed Kills Edition

Fast in the rain, just like Portland traffic in November

We’re all fast this week. Like Goose and Maverick, we’ve all got the need for speed — Nick’s taken a quick trip down to Los Angeles, Aaron’s gotten through Fable 3 so fast it made our heads spin, and Doug is still strapping on the helmet and racing cars.

We’re going too fast to post more of an introduction, so let’s get on to the Backlog.

The Backlog: Mobsters, Motorcars and Minecraft edition

This was a lot funnier in my head. Sorry, everybody.

At Silicon Sasquatch, one of our strengths — yes, we do have strengths — is our diversity of taste. Doug loves games where you drive a car in circles for hours, which Aaron will find baffling; surely his period-piece mafia adventure is a lot more fun. And both of them will think I’m absolutely out of my mind when I tell them I spent most of my free time this week hollowing out an entire mountain because, um, that’s just what I wanted to do.

So that’s what we’re focusing on this week: the things that make each of us special.

Sasquatch Soapbox: How GameFlow makes Madden 11 accessible

Americans love football. ESPN finds new and creative ways to talk about the NFL every single offseason, and EA Sports’ long-running Madden NFL series is routinely one of the best-selling games of the year. EA Tiburon, the long-time developer of Madden, has been able to make the series more and more realistic through the last and current console generations, to the point where understanding the Madden games helps you understand football better.

The problem there, though, is the learning curve involved with football strategy. Unlike basketball, soccer, or hockey, there’s more to a football game than just learning how to control a player. Football is more like a game of chess — to succeed against the AI or a real player, you need to understand how offenses and defenses are run, and what plays to call at what times and how to execute them. As a website like Smart Football proves, there is plenty of depth and strategy to football play-calling.

The Backlog: The Gang’s All Here edition

We’re baaaaaaaaaaaack. Aaron’s returned from a summer sojourn spent in the woods, and we felt “hey, we haven’t done a real good Backlog in a while” — nevermind one with the full crew. So though Nick has been criss-crossing the Pacific Northwest, Aaron has just come back to civilization, and Doug has been tangling with the local wildlife, there’s still plenty to talk about. Aaron needs some more time coming to grips with working Internet and electricity, but we do have a contribution from Tyler, our contributor and friend of the site who’s currently living la vida Nippon in Japan.

The Backlog: Silicon Sasquatch’s Finest Hour edition

Scott's a rocker. He rocks out.

So this book called Scott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour came out this week. You might not have read the series yet, but you’ve probably heard about the comics, or the upcoming game, or the movie starring Michael Cera. The reason it bears mentioning is that it’s a spot-on representation of the minds and memories of all of us children of the ’80s who grew up on Nintendo and Sega. If that sounds like something you can relate to, you’re probably going to love the comics.

It really has been a good week for us, too. This is our fifth post in seven days, which is almost a record for us. It’s even more impressive when you recall that we’re only running at two-thirds of our normal capacity because Aaron’s working  a summer job in the wilds of Oregon. But while he’s no doubt been perfecting his mountain-man beard and learning to forage for roots or something, Doug and I have been holding down the fort by playing our fair share of games. Check out what we’ve been up to after the jump, and if you’re feeling generous, why not let us know what you’ve been playing in the comments section? Consider it your one charitable act of the day.
