Backlog: The Final Countdown Edition
Dec 17th
It was either this or a picture of a Sasquatch-ified Gob Bluth. It's worth noting that, for once, ol' Sasquatch has the least implausible hair out of the bunch.
Our missives have been delivered without detection, each reaching the intended recipient under the strictest of discretionary measures. Exactly 24 hours from now, we’ll all convene at the predetermined meeting spot to do our dark work in secrecy.
Yeah, you guessed it. It’s that time of year where a bunch of dorks get together to drink beer and argue for a few hours about what the ten best games of the year were.
We’ll be continuing the tradition we established in 2009 by running a series of articles on our top ten games of 2010, along with a series of honorable mentions. This time we’re expanding things by bringing Matt into the fold, while longtime contributors Tyler and Spencer will be stepping up once again to weigh in.
Those articles will run starting on Monday, December 27th, and will culminate with our #1 Game of the Year on Friday, New Year’s Eve.
How did we spend our last week preparing for the debate? As it turns out, we didn’t really play a whole lot of games. You could call it unprofessional, but I prefer to think that we’re just on top of things this time around. Considering how many hours I sank into this year’s big releases throughout November (way too many, before you go and count), I think we’re probably more than ready to hash things out tomorrow.
Anyway, here’s what we’ve been up to.
The Backlog: Speed Kills Edition
Nov 5th
We’re all fast this week. Like Goose and Maverick, we’ve all got the need for speed — Nick’s taken a quick trip down to Los Angeles, Aaron’s gotten through Fable 3 so fast it made our heads spin, and Doug is still strapping on the helmet and racing cars.
We’re going too fast to post more of an introduction, so let’s get on to the Backlog.
The Backlog: Conventiontime Blues edition

This is basically what PAX looks like, except with more neckbeards, less politics, and a sea of iPhones
I couldn’t go to PAX 10. Neither could Doug. But Nick’s there! He’s also Internet famous now, thanks to his picture being taken at a Rock Band 3 event last night and then posted to Twitter. I can only hope that in his new-found celebrity, Nick Cummings won’t forget the little guy. And by “forget the little guy” I mean I hope he invites us to really rad pool parties in Hollywood.
OK. I won’t feel so bad about jumping right into the backlog now that my introduction is complete.
Let’s do this.
The Backlog: The Gang’s All Here edition
Aug 29th
We’re baaaaaaaaaaaack. Aaron’s returned from a summer sojourn spent in the woods, and we felt “hey, we haven’t done a real good Backlog in a while” — nevermind one with the full crew. So though Nick has been criss-crossing the Pacific Northwest, Aaron has just come back to civilization, and Doug has been tangling with the local wildlife, there’s still plenty to talk about. Aaron needs some more time coming to grips with working Internet and electricity, but we do have a contribution from Tyler, our contributor and friend of the site who’s currently living la vida Nippon in Japan.

The Backlog: Call a Plumber, the Great Plains are Flooded edition

The new Mario game is out, though we’re all still playing Red Dead Redemption. Alan Wake is also mentioned in this week’s edition, and Nick even played a real board game. Like, one that has pieces and tiles and you have to have a large, flat surface to play it on.
What an interesting year for games, and what a fantastic year for consumers. We have new iterations of old franchises (Mario), revamped sequels (Red Dead) and fresh concepts from established developers (Alan Wake). The most amazing fact about that previous sentence is every one those games came out during the month of May, which further means we’re only halfway through 2010.
Oh hell yes.
The Backlog: Red Dead Way of Life edition
May 22nd
Some might deride it as simply GTA: Old West, some are praising it as one of the best games of the year (Metacritic has its issues but just look at that aggregate score right now), but however you structure it, Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption is out and is the hot topic of the week. Aaron and Nick have started to sink their teeth into Rockstar San Diego’s western tale, while Doug is still struggling with the wild grizzly bear that is graduate school.
Enough about that nonsense, though. Let’s get on with the show.
Why I can’t wait for Red Dead Redemption

Hype is a strange thing. It causes all sorts of people to vehemently defend a product they’ve never even touched. And despite my best efforts to remain neutral about the release of certain new videogames — in a laughable effort to sustain my school-bred journalistic ethics — I’m as susceptible to flashy advertisements and smart marketing as any modern consumer.
Red Dead Redemption, which is out today, coerced me to put my money down based on its trailers and previews alone. My fistful of (60) dollars is purchasing an untested game that I’ve barely seen or read about, and no matter how capable Rockstar is as a developer, every company makes mistakes (i.e., Capcom’s unsuccessful attempts at building western-focused franchises). This horse-riding, cattle-rustling and outlaw-shooting game could be a flop, but for more than a few reasons I don’t believe that’s the truth.
Instead, I’m going to tell you exactly why I’ve saddled up to ride into the hype-laden sunset.
2010: The Year We Make Contact…and subsequently go broke

Well, would you look at that — another podcast! And this one’s blessedly much shorter than the previous, meaning you get plenty of on-topic discussion and analysis without having to meander through dozens of games and several months of backlogged news to cover.
This podcast picks up where the last one left off, with the gang discussing the myriad top-tier releases of the first quarter of 2010. A near-complete list of titles is available after the jump for your perusal.
As always, thanks for listening, and let us know what you think!
